Because we specialise in figured wood and reclaimed wood we can't guarantee to have a particular size in stock. We have given "sample" prices as a guide to how much a wood type will cost (its all done "per cubic foot"). Its best to phone, email or visit (visit by arrangement please) to find out what actual sizes we currently have.

Ash

Ash is a pale white/cream wood with a coarse grain. It turns well and most finishes work well - oil, sanding sealer + wax, danish oil etc. It can be limed since, like oak, it has an open grain structure which holds "pockets" of the white liming wax.

Olive ash has a brown/silvery staining that works its way out from the centre and introduces a seperate pattern from the figure of the wood. It can produce some dramatic effects and is therefore prized above plain ash (for woodturning at least).

Rippled ash is rare and, like oliving, adds an extra dimension to the figure. It is rare as most rippled trees are sold for veneer. Occasionally a tree has a little rippling around the point at which a limb splits out from the trunk - often this is combined with a "feather", the pattern caused by the interlocking grain that stops a limb splitting away.
